1. Develop your social editorial calendar

We know that social media is time consuming. From brainstorming ideas and drafting content, to posting content and monitoring your channels for engagement and leads, maintaining a thoughtful and up-to-date social presence is hard work. That’s why it’s so important to draft an editorial calendar.

The goal of an editorial calendar is to develop ideas for social posts, ultimately saving you time throughout the month. Instead of scrambling to come up with an idea every few days, you can just take a look at your calendar for content ideas.

Depending on your needs, an editorial calendar can be as much or as little built-out as you’d like. It can be anything from a list of reminders (like sales and promotions, or events) to a full calendar with tweets and posts written out in full and ready to go for the month.

GOAL: Take 15 minutes to begin an editorial calendar for the next 30 days.

2. Network a little

Make the most out of any downtime by networking a little bit. We’re all guilty of letting our connections go cold. If you haven’t connected with old business associates or clients in a while, take some time to write a concise and thoughtful email or LinkedIn message.

Include a brief message about what you’re currently up to and a question about something related to your connection, with the ultimate goal of reconnecting and fostering the relationship.

GOAL: Spend five minutes writing an email to at least three connections.

3. Clean house

Getting organized is an important part of keeping yourself calm, focused, and energized. How can you tackle the myriad issues that arise every week if you’re feeling cluttered and disorganized?

Staying organized in every area of your life - both digital and physical - will help you save time, and ultimately allow you to allocate more time to important aspects of your company - including marketing!

Here are two things you can do right now to get better organized:

* Create labels in your email inbox to help better organize your correspondence.

* Organize your physical space. A clean desk will help your mind focus on order and expectations, and ultimately help you get more done.

GOAL: Spend 10 minutes getting organized for the month ahead.

4. Write a blog post

If you’re always complaining about never having enough time to write a post for your blog, today is the day to break the cycle.

Having a well-maintained and thoughtful blog is a fantastic way to engage current customers and increase your reach online. Your blog is one of the best ways to increase organic traffic to your website, so not updating with new content is letting a great opportunity go to waste.

If you’re low on ideas for your blog, try one of these quick ideas:

* Write a blog post about something new in your industry.

* Create a how to guide.

* Write a summary of an event you’ve recently hosted or attended.

* Conduct an interview with a member of your staff.

GOAL: Spend 20 minutes writing an engaging 250-300-word blog post.

5. Follow 50 people on Twitter

If you’re just starting out on social media, you’re inevitably going to be low on followers. You can always purchase social ads, but there are also ways to gain followers organically.

For better or for worse, “follow back” culture is big on Twitter. In a “follow back” culture, when you follow someone, there’s a good chance that they’ll follow you back. But, the chance of them following you back increases if they are actually interested in your industry or business.

So how do you identify users that may be interested in following you back?

* Follow the people following your competitors.

If they’re already interested in other frozen yogurt shops, local contractors, law firms, or plumbers in your area, then they may also be interested in following you too.

* Follow the people following your local newspaper.

Local newspapers are a great source of news about your community, and many of them are on Twitter. Their followers are likely to be interested in local businesses, tech-savvy, and, most importantly, in your geographical area!

GOAL: Spend 10 minutes researching competitors and local newspapers on Twitter, and follow 50 of their followers.

This entire list represents just one hour of work to help you get organized and ultimately further your marketing strategy.
