The largest group of Mennonite congregations in the U.S. recently announced it is officially separating from the Mennonite community over disagreements with sexuality and the church. The Lancaster Mennonite Conference, which has 179 churches in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York, voted to leave the Mennonite Church USA in 2015, with the vote taking effect Jan. 1. The LMC churches oppose same-sex marriage and clashed with the broader community because of policies that included hiring policies pertaining to LGBT people. The Mennonite Church USA considers homosexual activity a sin and defines marriage as between one man and one woman, but some pastors have performed same-sex marriages.
