RELIGIOUS EVENTS IN HISTORY
On June 2, 1875, James Augustine Healy becomes the first African-American to be named a Catholic bishop in the United States. Previously in 1854, Healy was the first African-American to be ordained as a Roman Catholic priest after graduating from the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts. He then went to seminary schools in Montreal and Paris to study to become a seminary professor. Healy later decided to become a pastor and served as a priest in Boston. After his successful career in Boston, he was appointed to the position of second bishop of Portland, Maine, by Pope Pius IX. On June 2, Healy was consecrated as the Bishop of Portland.
