RELIGIOUS EVENTS IN HISTORY

June 15, 1215, King John of England signs the Magna Carta. Considered by many as the greatest constitutional document of all time, the Magna Carta is a charter of rights agreed to by King John and a group of rebel barons. It was drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown. Although neither the King or barons stood behind their commitments, the Magna Carta still serves as an important symbol of liberty.
